Snapshot of the computer market

“2011 was supposed to be the year of the Android tablet. For one thing an addendum to the report lists for the first time the names of Apple’s major subcontractors — 156 companies, many in the Far East, representing 97% of the company’s supply chain. The list is available here for anyone to read. The argument for counting iPads as PCs is because many people are buying an iPad now INSTEAD OF a computer. One year later, Android tablets have failed to meet expectations and for the most part have been unsuccessful.

The same cannot be said for smart phones at this time. (I think down the road this may change as well, with improved user interfaces.) For another, the report enumerates the violations discovered — and Apple’s responses — in the company’s 2011 audit of those suppliers. Although most electronics manufacturers rely on the same labor force to make their products, Apple tends to get singled for criticism when abuses come to light.

This year, tablets had a much smaller presence as vendors appear to be placing greater emphasis on Windows 8. We expect Windows 8 ARM tablets to ramps slowly as most Apps require rewriting for ARM-based tablet hardware.Although most of Apple’s suppliers were discovered to be in violation of one rule or another — nearly 70%, for example, failed to pay proper overtime — Apple severed relations with only one of them: an unnamed “repeat offender.”

It seems to me that if you allow iPads to be counted as PCs, then naturally you need to allow all touch interface tablets to be counted as PCs, including 7″ and 5″ tablets, and then…the 4.65″ smartphones,The audit is unlikely to satisfy critics like monologist Mike Daisey — who reports that suppliers are routinely forewarned of Apple’s inspections in time to hide their underage workers — but the fact remains that the company is the only American electronics manufacturer we know of that bothers to conduct these yearly checks.

As if to underscore his point, Whitmore’s note to clients Friday included the above chart, showing what IDC’s picture of the global computer market would look like if the tracking firm counted tablets as computers. We remain skeptical that Win 8 tablets will gain much traction this year (App rewrites take time / developer ecosystem support). As a result, we expect the move away from Android tablet investment and a slow ramp of Win 8 tablets to create a favorable competitive backdrop for Apple’s forthcoming iPad 3.”

Verizon’s 4G service

Unlike previous systems that use switches to control traffic, 4G uses “cores,” that act like large, centralized command-and-control centers. Switches covered city blocks, but 4G cores are now serving multiple states. If one goes out, entire regions could lose service.AT&T plans on adding another “10 or more” markets in the second half of the year, but it didn’t say which markets they will be.Mobile data traffic has more than doubled in each of the past three years, according to Cisco.

The company says its Long Term Evolution (LTE) service will be available to 70 million Americans by the end of 2011.Customers across the country, from California to Ohio to Virginia, took to Verizon’s forums to complain that service was knocked out, though gripes were mostly limited to the new 4G LTE data network, which Verizon began to roll out a year ago. Voice calls, texts and 3G data were unaffected, according to the company.4G-branded network.

That network runs on a different, “HSPA+” standard, which is actually a 3G standard, but has been shown to deliver speeds on par with — or faster than — LTE. LTE stands for Long Term Evolution, but it isn’t a long-term solution to the nation’s wireless problems. Verizon (VZ, Fortune 500) and HTC named the first LTE smartphone “Thunderbolt” for a reason. It was the second nationwide outage in as many weeks for Verizon’s 4G network, and the third since April.

That’s a tough pill to swallow for Verizon, which has built its brand on network reliability.Yes, that’s right: AT&T’s current 4G offering could, in some instances, be faster than its soon-to-be-released, new 4G network. Some early customers on Verizon’s recently launched LTE network say they’ve clocked speeds of double the 12 Mbps maximum target that the carrier advertised.”Verizon is a pioneer, and it’s suffering the fate that all pioneers face,” said Ken Rehbehn, analyst at Yankee Group.

“Depending upon a user’s location and configuration of cell sites nearby, HSPA+ could exceed — or even radically exceed — speeds achieved with LTE,” said Dan Hays, telecom consultant at PRTM. The bad news for Verizon and its customers is that wireless infrastructure experts expect this isn’t the last time the 4G network will go down. Since Verizon was the first company in the world to deploy a 4G LTE network at any great scale, it is dealing with the usual early adopter growing pains.

Ipad lead customers to post-PC era

We examine new features on the device and how they will help Apple grasp an even tighter hold on the tablet market, what that means for competitors like Google and Samsung and why the device could be the best example yet of computing in what Steve Jobs calls “the post-PC world.” Companies mentioned in this report include Apple, Motorola, Samsung and Google. For a full list of companies, and to read the full research note, sign up for a free trial.

Two-fingered typing on an iPad’s screen may suffice for quick e-mails, but real work requires a real computer feel. Turn your tablet into a laptop with the Logitech Keyboard Case for iPad 2, an aluminum protector for your tablet that also works as a wireless keyboard (not always allowed for use in flight) and stand. Apple’s applied for ownership of two Chinese trademarks related to the iPad name (“iPAD” and “IPAD”), made prior to its introduction of the iPad for sale to Chinese consumers.

But that application was rejected by the trademark office because they were listed as owned by Proview Technology, not Proview Electronics, which brokered the original sale. The second quarter of 2011 in mobile was all about smartphones, thanks to Google’s Android, Apple’s iOS and mobile data consumption ramping up. In the tablet space, the iPad lacked any real competition, though that dominance will surely fade as more and more alternatives — from Cisco, HP and others — emerge.

Elsewhere, location-based marketing finally made some headlines, and the groundwork for near-field communications looks to be finally falling into place. Additional companies in this report include Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft and Research In Motion. For a full list of companies, and to read the full report, sign up for a free trial.Does iPad 2 live up to the enormous amount of hype surrounding it? The answer is yes, and this research note explains why.

We’ll have to wait and see how this shakes out, but it’s probably going to take the form of a settlement for a sum somewhere far south of the $1.5 billion Proview is seeking in damages, since Apple likely wants this to go away as quickly as possible so it can continue its impressive success with the iPad in China without distraction. You can’t transfer edited files directly to a USB hard drive or memory stick. And a first-generation iPad won’t work as well as an iPad 2.

Top Android phone

While Amazon’s Kindle Fire has come out of the gates strong, as expected, we see Apple maintaining its competitive lead, if anything accentuated by what now looks like the only tablet to so far mount any credible iPad challenge apparently needing to do so by selling at cost; not to mention Amazon’s success may just vaporize other “for profit” Android tablet OEM roadmaps (e.g., we est Amazon 50% of all Android tablets in CY12).

Meanwhile Apple goes on as the only vendor able to cream off the most profitable segment of each market it targets, whether tablet, smartphone or PC.So there’s a lot at stake for the giant Taiwanese phone maker — and indeed for the manufacturers of all Google (GOOG) Android phones — in the ruling due next week from a six-member panel at the International Trade Commission in Washington. It’s also Google’s worst nightmare for Android.

HTC shipped more than 5.7 million smartphones to the U.S. last quarter, according to Canalys, beating out Samsung and Apple to become the country’s leading smartphone vendor. This will be fun to watch. AMZN made $63M in profits last qtr and will take a $250M+ loss this qtr. I know where that path leads — empty pockets & no R&D. Then comes the closing of the doors without any profits, just ask solar companies. I think AMZN would shut down hardware side before went BK, but this is the path they all take.

There have been a lot of headlines lately about Apple vs. Android patent rulings, some in Apple’s favor, some against. But this could be the big one.The two patents at issue (see below) appear to be at Android’s core. If HTC has infringed them, according to FOSS Patents’ Florian Mueller, so have the makers of all Android phones.Possibly coincidence but analysts aren’t really good at that “original thought” thing. Matters not to me. We all know they lurk around these forums to steal ideas.

“Google’s Android mobile operating system is in serious trouble,” Mueller wrote after last summer’s ruling. “It’s hard to see how any Android device could not infringe [the patents], or how companies could work around them.”In the worst case scenario for HTC, the trade commission could ban the import of its Android phones at the height of the holiday selling season, and its 25% U.S. smartphone market share could shrink to 0.0%.

The PC keeps on finding new ways to stay relevant

First there was the laptop. Then netbooks. Now Ultrabooks. The competition for payment processing services, especially mobile payments, is heating up.Last week Google kicked it up a notch by announcing that it’s phasing out Google Checkout in favor of the new Google Wallet. This service supports in-store tap-to-pay payments from your phone via near field communications technology, as well as purchases on the web.If you log in to your Google Checkout account now, you’ll be notified that you’ve been switched over to Google Wallet.

Any credit cards or other payment information you’ve saved in Google Checkout will be available in Google Wallet. The iPad isn’t going to kill the PC entirely, but experts say it’s slowing purchases of laptops, particularly small notebook PCs like netbooks. When Hewlett-Packard (HPQ, Fortune 500) said it was considering getting out of the PC business in August, then-CEO Leo Apotheker cited as a prime reason that “the tablet effect is real.”The catch: Google Wallet isn’t yet widely used for in-store purchases.

“To compete with media tablets, notebook PCs must become sexier and more appealing to consumers,” said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst at IHS. “Enter the Ultrabook, which borrows some of the form-factor and user-interface advantages of the media tablet.”So far its NFC payments are enabled only for Sprint Nexus S users who also have a Citibank MasterCard or a Google prepaid card, and who are making purchases at MasterCard PayPass-enabled merchant locations.

Intel describes an Ultrabook as a notebook PC that is thinner than 0.8 inches, has Flash memory, can be turned on instantly, is always connected and has a battery life of longer than eight hours.Unlike netbooks — which typically have cramped keyboards, sluggish processors and stripped-down versions of Windows XP — Ultrabooks have full-sized keyboards, run the latest version of Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) Windows and will feature Intel’s newest chipsets.

That list rivals the features found in the iPad and similar tablets — and, of course, the MacBook Air.But in the coming year, more U.S. smartphones will be equipped with NFC, bringing a variety of tap-to-pay or wave-to-pay options to consumers. A competing NFC-based mobile phone payment system, ISIS, is launching in some markets (Austin, Texas, and Salt Lake City) in 2012.In May, Intel (INTC, Fortune 500) first unveiled the Ultrabook — a name it trademarked.

Restricted live TV to the iPad

A live-TV application and companion device will be made available to Comcast customers in two cities in the next few weeks, a spokeswoman said. The program will be called AnyPlay and will unlock iPad access to every channel included in a subscriber’s cable package. In just two months, digital will overtake film as the predominant movie projector technology in the world’s cinemas, according to a study released this week by IHS.

It will be the first time since the advent of the motion picture in 1889 that film projectors will be used to screen a minority of movies.Comcast announced plans in January to offer live TV streaming on tablets in the home “later this year,” but the company had not publicly provided an update. The blockbuster 3-D movie’s release in late 2009 sparked a rapid increase in digital projector purchases, since its three-dimensional effects couldn’t be viewed with a celluloid film projector.

Not wanting to miss out on the highest-grossing movie of all time, theaters were quick to upgrade their technology.

Other cable and satellite TV operators, including Time Warner Cable, DirecTV and Cablevision, already offer live video to iPads, and they all require subscribers to be within range of their home Wi-Fi networks.”The release of Avatar represented the pivotal moment for digital cinema,” said David Hancock, head of film and cinema research at IHS. “Before Avatar, digital represented only a small portion of the market. This single film has driven up demand for digital 3-D technology at the expense of traditional 35-mm celluloid.”

No major video providers have been able to offer live video outside of the home because of the way agreements with TV networks are written, Blaxland said. Only technical workarounds like Sling Media’s Slingbox, a device that connects to a cable box and broadcasts a home TV signal to a remote app, can skirt the issue.Comcast executives aren’t concerned about the in-home stipulation because most online video is watched at home anyway, according to research firm Nielsen.

The battle between Apple & Samsung

“For as long as Apple does not drop mobile telecommunications functions, it would be impossible for it to sell its i-branded products without using our patents,” an unnamed senior Samsung executive told The Korea Times in September. “We will stick to a strong stance against Apple during the lingering legal fights.”Samsung threatened to have Apple’s next-generation iPhone banned in South Korea before the device was even announced. Now Samsung backs off threat to have iPhone 4S banned in Korea

Now, however, the company is backing down from that threat after a successful launch of the iPhone 4S on its home turf. Instead, according to Samsung, it will focus on its current ongoing global legal battles with Apple.According to Samsung’s official statement, however, the decision not to pursue an injunction was based on public relations concerns. “We concluded that we should engage in legal battles with Apple only in the global market, but not in order to gain more market share in Korea.”

Those who held off on an iPhone 4S purchase until the unlocked version became available can now whip out their credit cards—but it’s gonna hurt. Apple began selling unlocked versions of the iPhone 4S via its US online store Friday alongside a handful of international iPhone 4S launches—the phones don’t require the typical two-year contract and only work on GSM networks.Greenpeace’s latest “Guide to Greener Electronics” was released on Wednesday, ranking Apple in fourth place among several of its consumer electronics peers.

What’s significant, however, is that Apple moved up five spots from its ninth place ranking in the last report, largely due to improved product efficiency, removal of most (if not all) toxic substances, and over 70 percent product recycling.Apple was recently given permission to obtain the confidential licensing agreements between Samsung and Qualcomm from a US court, and has indicated it will enter the terms of those agreements into evidence in suits where Samsung is asserting standards essential patents.

As the worldwide legal battle between Samsung and Apple has escalated over the last year, Apple won a few preliminary injunctions in Germany, Australia, and the Netherlands. Samsung decided to go on the offensive using several of its patents related to 3G wireless networking standards, filing injunction requests in The Netherlands, Germany, France, and Italy, among others. It’s likely that those terms could prove damaging to any attempt to gain an injunction against the iPhone 4S in South Korea as well.

Macs continues to be considerable in PC market
No one can deny the unprecedented advantages of laptop. For the sake of the whole world take the advantage of its portable and convenience. But there is a strange phenomenon that Americans still like to buy their Macs. What’s more, the sales of Macs keeps a high percentage of Apple laptop. The good news for PC makers is that Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) has gotten the message loud and clear. Windows 8, which is expected to debut sometime next year, will be optimized for tablets.

Americans’ satisfaction with their personal computers is at an all-time high, but buyers’ happiness with Apple’s Macs continues to top Windows PCs.An American Customer Satisfaction Index report released Tuesday shows that consumers are the happiest that they’ve ever been with their computers. The 16-year old survey found that PCs scored a rating of 78 out of 100, matching the record score set last year.

PC manufacturer to score a higher rating this year than in 2010. HP decided last month to get out of the PC business.HP’s score of 78 was up one point from the 77 it scored in 2010. Compaq, a low-end HP brand, had a satisfaction score of 75 in the 2011 survey, up from 74 last year.”

Apple’s customer satisfaction dominance has been unassailable for the past eight years,” said Claes Fornell, founder of the ACSI, an Ann Arbor, Mich.-based research group. “Apple’s winning combination of innovation and product diversification has kept the company consistently at the leading edge.”

Apple won a significant victory on Tuesday in its campaign against Samsung Electronics over alleged intellectual-property infringements.Still, Apple’s PC market share is growing fast. In the United States, it commands just shy of 11% of the market, good enough for third place, according to Gartner. Sales at market leaders HP and Dell are sinking.People may love their Windows computers, but PC makers are finding affection doesn’t always translate into robust sales.

Many video professionals and early adopters of the application have already lashed out criticism for Apple leaving out professional features that were present in earlier versions of FCP. Aside from this features list, it is important to note that Apple powerbook g4 battery has also combined parts of their Color, DVD Studio Pro and Soundtrack applications into Final Cut Pro X.

As we have seen in recent days in the last hours, Sony vgp-bps9 s battery is making great strides. Yesterday I commented on the announcement of the compatibility of your digital publishing tool Newsstand and Dani hours ago I had Adobe Carousel, an excellent alternative photographic icloud. To follow the line of announcements, Adobe has released an annual growth of 45 percent thanks to its video production tools, and largely thanks to Final Cut Pro X.

A blend of comedy and tragedy with reality as I mentioned, as reflected in the title, a particular reason to justify this growth is the migration of users dissatisfied with the latest version of Final Cut Pro Premiere Pro X to put it another Thus, while the video editing software from Adobe is excellent and is one of the choices of many professionals, the main reason for his recent success is largely thanks to switchers in search of alternative products after being disappointed by latest release of IBM ThinkPad x60 battery.

Remember months ago took the controversy Adobe Final Cut Pro X and started a program to switchers, that is, launched a brilliant and strategic campaign discounts, and published documentation and video tutorials for easy transition to Adobe Premiere Pro obviously the announcement of a 45% increase in video production tools for Toshiba pa3534u 1brs battery, and a total annual growth of 22% on both PC and Mac, show that this move was a success.

On the contrary, as announced by the source of the news, Apple’s effort has not been as remarkable. After numerous complaints and claims by the user community, the compaq presario v2000 battery company has released only a guide of questions and answers, has made refunds to dissatisfied customers and, more recently, has released Final Cut Pro 7 their online store at $ 999. Are you a professional or maybe an amateur video? Have you been forced to migrate to alternative uses to Final Cut?
